Bottega Veneta Honors 50 Years of Intrecciato

BOTTEGA VENETA_CRAFT IS OUR LANGUAGE_JULIANNE MOORE.jpg

This year, Bottega Veneta celebrates a milestone: half a century of its iconic leather weaving technique, Intrecciato. To mark the occasion, the Maison has launched a breathtaking campaign—“Craft Is Our Language.” It's not just a tribute to a signature design; it’s a poetic homage to craftsmanship, connection, and the universal vocabulary of hands.

A Visual Symphony of Hands & Artistry

Shot in evocative black-and-white, the campaign was photographed and directed by Jack Davison and choreographed by Lenio Kaklea. Together, they focus on hand gestures—hearts, interlaced fingers, peace signs—that transcend language and speak directly to the viewer. These gestures embody the quiet elegance and tactile intimacy at the core of Bottega Veneta’s philosophy.

A Cast United by Creativity

Rather than relying on flashy celebrities, Bottega Veneta blends the worlds of artisan and artist. The campaign brings together a remarkable ensemble—Zadie Smith, Julianne Moore, Tyler, the Creator, Lauren Hutton, Edward Buchanan, and many others—posed alongside the very hands that weave Intrecciato. Each portrait captures a dialogue: maker and muse, hand and mind.

Key figures include:

  • Edward Buchanan, former Design Director (1995–2000), who introduced Bottega’s first ready-to-wear line.

  • Lauren Hutton, who elevated Intrecciato’s fame when she carried an Intrecciato clutch in the 1980 film American Gigolo.

Craft as a Metaphor—and Message

The Intrecciato stitch—introduced in 1975—is more than a weaving technique. Crafted painstakingly by hand, it symbolizes connection, heritage, and evolution. Rooted in Veneto’s leatherworking traditions, it's a timeless motif that defines Bottega Veneta’s identity without a logo.

The campaign elevates this technique to a metaphor for universal communication—a quiet assertion that craftsmanship itself is a form of dialogue.

What’s Next: A Visual Dictionary

Continuing the campaign's narrative, Bottega Veneta will publish a coffee-table book in September. It will feature a curated “dictionary” of 50 hand gestures, each representing facets of the brand’s ethos, values, and creative spirit. The concept draws inspiration from Bruno Munari’s 1963 handbook, Supplemento al Dizionario Italiano, on the expressive power of gestures.

Additionally, a second chapter of the campaign—new images and short films—will roll out later in 2025, offering further depth to the evolving craft narrative.

Why It Matters

Bottega Veneta’s quiet luxury speaks volumes in a world saturated with conspicuous branding. This latest campaign underscores a trend: luxury that prioritizes humanity, heritage, and authenticity over flash. The emphasis on craft resonates with today’s discerning consumers seeking stories, transparency, and the soul behind products.
